In my reading I happen to encounter one special word that I can not clearify it,PROSCIBE,. Based on Webster Dictionary the prefex, pro, mean before and scribe or scriptus mean to write, but why does this in Oxford Dictionary infer as aviod or prohibit?

Hope to procure your share soon

Hi Mino,

Nice to see you back on the site.
Your question is kind of a difficult one. Of course, in Latin, pro/pre = before and scribe = write. Therefore the meaning of proscribe should be to write in advance. Yet most of the dictionaries define it as to prohibit or ban sth. I haven't found the reason for it yet.

Let check these out:

http://onelook.com/?w=proscribe&ls=a
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=proscribe

Note: If proscribe means to write beforehand, what does prescribe mean?

Will be right back

It is nice to here from both of you guys, Jupi and Mino!

According to your question, I think, Mino, you guy may learn too much about the English root words, that is why you guy form such a question!

Before you guy definize one word, you have to look at the dictionaries first, and in the event that you can't find in any dicts then it is the chance we assess it by using the combination of the root words.

Just idea!!

PS: How are you both doing? I have not seen you for long time. Hope to see you soon!

Dear guy

whatever thanks for your recommendation. anyway, A reason that I pinned point the prblem of word to it does not mean that I myself base on my understanding in Etimology then try to guest their meaning. I have been trying to look up in many dictionairies. Vitaully, as a result, the dictionairies just give us its meaning, nevertheless, the meaning of combination of root words does not go alongside with the meaning in dictionairies. However, you guy and Jupiter have tried to help me thanks alot.

May you be where you want to be

If you proscribe something, you ban it- to be an effective ban, it needs to be written.
