Hi Mary,

Welcome to the 5steps website. I am very glad you have become a member here!!! I am Somala. Well, let's see. I have recently taken the TOEFL test too. Cheesy

If you want to take the TOEFL, in my opinion, you should go to RUPP (Royal University of Phnom Penh. There, you should search for the testing center which provides you information about the TOEFL date. REcently, there has not been an offical TOEFL yet. So you need to ask for information for sure.

Have fun Cheesy.

Hi mary

I glad to see here. I have some advice for you to improve listening skill. There are some points that I generally practise listening everyday at home. I would like to mention as the following: 1>listening to music- not jus listen for relax- download some lyrics of ur favourite songs, read the lyrics and listen.  2>watch English program/movie on TV that hav subtitle in English- try to listen what they are talkin about and read subtitle at same time. 3> if u need practise books, u can go to Angkor Bookstore and aske them- There are many kind of books that u need. Hey one more thing, if it isn't neccesary for u to take TOEFL test, dont try it. U know why, when u get low score, it ll discourage u. Now jus try to practise TOEFL more in order to buid up ur abiity....That all for me.
Good luck, Take care.

Hi,Phearith,

Thanks for your advices.Yes,I agree with you,I should try listenning more English songs those I know lyrics, and watching more English movies those have subtitles.

I have been learning English for more ten years. It's a pity that I still can not deeply understand the person's meanning who speaks English in front of me.Some time I feel like a deaf and mute. It's really too bad.
haha~May be you can not believe that~but this is a true big trouble for me.

I really thanks for sharing your learning experiences with me.Hope I can improve my English quickly with your help.

thanks

Hi Phearith and Mary, Cheesy

I am mary,from China.

Oh, you are from China, aren't you? Well, again, I first skipped reading it. Now I'm a bit surprised you are Chinese, Mary. Welcome again! And could you please tell us more about you? Cheesy

So you want to take the TOEFL soon? Tomorrow, I will go to RUPP to get my score paper of the TOEFL. I took it last Saturday. It was just ITP and in fact I intended to see how well I could do it. And as I have heard from the man at the desk in the testing center, the next official TOEFL is going to be CBT (computer-based TOEFL) Cheesy . I was a bit disappointed  Sad . But they are quite similar in some ways.

Mary, me too!!! This thing is shared by us non-native speakers. You are not alone in that situation. Don't feel discouraged, my friend, because there are plenty of time to practice and many more things to learn. Listening, in my opinion, is the hardest part of English. It is achieved through the repeated practice of accessing the English sound into your ears and getting used to it a lot. Cheesy

I agree with Phearith's ideas.

Before taking the TOEFL, please prepare hard for it. And you are lucky because I bet the official TOEFL might take place in two or three months or less than that. Cheesy

Good luck, Mary.

Hey,Somala,

You are so kind for me.It is true I come from Mainland China, and I have been here two and half years for my job.I really like this country's people and climate.Especially, there are so many delicious subtropical fruits, haha~ Cheesy

Yeah, originally I wanna to take the TOEFL test in Nov.,but if they only can give CBT next time, maybe I won't try it.Because I didn't prepare for it at all.In the fact,I really feel scared for any test. And the most important thing is I still feel confused about the test excersises.(I didn't go to RUPP yet,so I still don't know any information about TOFEL in Camboida.if there has been possible,I will go there tomorrow too.But I am not sure wether I will be free or not).I know you might have gotten  a high score. You English is so wonderful~

I should do hard-working on TOFEL~This is a great assignment~

Good luck

Hi here, especailly Mary

YOu are welcome Mary. I actually surprise while hearing your coming from China.

Let turn to your troble anyway. You have mentioned that you are a weak-listening-skill person, ain't you? I am also another one who don't involve in this issue, yet to overcome this awful thing just practise it daily. We have many sources to do so like:

listening to radio( ABC, Lovefm, BBC, VOA...), Listening to English songs( casette, audio cd, vcd, dvd, mp3...), wacthing TVs ( CNN, CTN news, ...) or watching movies of which prove the subtittle esp. in the cable TV. Moreover, the best way to do so is to pratice with foriegners, teachers or you peers and then.

Poor Mala! I am whole-heartedly pity you  Tongue ; you got only 560 toefl marks.

You know I got it merely 160 marks te. Hu hu ha

Cheerio!!

Kimlong

PS: Oh sorry Mary for late participating your topic. Nice to be aware of so a person like you chinese. Hope you are on this forum for good.

Mary, I think that everyone studyin English has this feelin too. But dont blame urself, think for other good ways: why I am lik this, How I overcome it, what I should do next, ...

Everyone hav their own problem n disability. Me also. Sometimes I feel bad abou my English caus I cant speak English fluently n some of my pronounciation are really bad.

Anyway, nothing is better than practice it again and again.

keosomala, Congraduation ur TOEFL score. U hav such good ideas to share. I really appreciate ur advices.

PS: Hey Mary, the most difficult problem in TOEFL is idiom.

GOOD LUCK
