Hi 50k,

I see you are concerned with the accent of your English speaking. To tell you the truth, I don't have an American or British accent. My accent is simple and hope local and foreign people can understand me.  Grin So far I have understood that there are a lot of non-native  speakers of English outside Cambodia having simple accents, neither American nor British, but they can still make themselves understood.

However, if you are keen to have a particular native accent like an American, Australian or British, it's important to listen carefully and imitate their speaking.  Smiley As for me, I try to pronounce words clearly while I'm speaking. And you should try pronouncing each word according to another style you want to adopt. Again, it's not as easy stuff to enrich your accent to be like a native speaker's. You are supposed to go through some years of practice. Listen, listen carefully and you'll catch the points to start on your own.

If you want to listen to American English, go to www.voaspecialenglish.com. While you are listening it, you can have your own time repeating the words they say.

Just some ideas.  Grin

It's hard to shape your accent when you're already an adult.

I remember the first few years of studying English. I was about 11 or 12 years old. By just watching music videos, listening to English-language radio shows and songs, and watching English-teaching TV program, I can speak English with good American or Australian accent even though my vocabulary and grammar was still much limited.

Now I'm 24 years old and I've been studying Japanese for a few years. I wonder why it's so hard for me to adopt Japanese accent.

You mean the accent.

You got to focus on pronounciation, intonation and stress.

Pronounciation is how you pronounce the word correctly. This relate to stress.

Intonation is how you shape your voice for each sentence correctly.

Like when you start with loud voice and end the sentence with low voice.

yes, hard not only to you but to almost every of non-native speakers of English, I suppose.  To me, the accent is not really important.  What matters the most is try to make sure that you can have your message across.  That's the heart of communication.

anyway, you're advised to travel more frequently, if you can, to the countries that speak the language.  Even better, reside in the said countries for as long as you can, you will even start dreaming in a very mother-tongue accent...

In other word, you make sure your message is understandable and communicatable, thats enough for the speakers.
