What does the word "benchmark" mean?

Please help to explain me this word as i have trouble with it for a while.

Bencemark is like milestone... its like a mark to MARK your success. For example, this year you graduate from high school, its your first Bencemark, next 4 years you graduate from your university, its another bencemark. Do you got it?
