The key words are mainly related to when, why,what, where, how, and so on. Also, you have to consider some other nouns that is important in the sentence.

Key word = Key + word

Key= something used for unlock something
word= word

So Key word means word that shows you something in the paragraph or essay that you are reading. To be simple, key word is the word that contains the main ideas of the topic of the article or something you read. I guess key word mostly appear in the topic sentence of the paragraph and in the thesis statement of an essay.

Ok, hope it helps,

P.

Keywords don't have a single part of speech; they could be nouns, verbs, etc.

A tool for keywords:

1 Find an online text.  Read it and make a note of what you think the keywords are.
2 Copy the text.   Click on this link http://www.usingenglish.com/resources/text-statistics.php and paste it.  Press the Calculate Now button.
3 Look at the results.  It removes common grammatical words and shows you a Word Cloud, where the bigger the word is, the more common it is in the text.  This often shows you a clear picture of the most important words relating to the theme of the text.  It works better with texts that are a couple of hundred words or longer.
