At the moment, i'm in trouble with one sentence which make me post it here to get ur helps. I got that sentence from a grammar book called Pratival English Usage. The sentence is The more you study, the less you learn
Do u have any idea about the sentence? What is the difference between Study and Learn?
I've looked up in the dictionary it reads:
Learn (v) : get knowledge by studying
Study (v) : give your time and attention to learning about something
but i can't distinguish between these two words, so what are ur ideas about the sentence? speak your mind now !

hope to get your helps Smiley

Hello Jupiter, Cheesy

I Smiley n my point of view, 'the more you study, the less you learn' is a sentence which takes a lot of thinking. I think in this sentence 'study' means 'learn a particular thing' which sounds just like a small and narrow item for people. For example, you study English, and you do not learn more about others. And 'learn' here means 'learn a variety of things', for example, you learn many things regarding life or something else like that. For instance, when you study and study, you forget to learn other things which are necessary.  Moreover, when you study a lot, you learn less because you do not have time for learning, just for studying a particular thing.

 This is merely what I think, but everybody, especially Paul, will explain us more about this.

Hi Jupiter, I am Lisa. Pretty interesting, isnt it? " THE MORE YOU STUDY, THE LESS YOU LEARN."

Well, when i first read this sentence, my instict started to tell me LEARNING is the BENIFITIAL or the FEEDBACK of STUDY.
For example:
I taught you to watch surrounding whenever you fight, yeah you did get the message and you'd been trained(studied) very well. You became a great fighter.
One day, while fighting with a group of gangs, you lost your focus and they got you. No matter what reasons it was, i said to you: YOU WILL NEVER LEARN..

I think the explanation of that two words you found in the dictionary have shown exactly what it means. Just like that: THE MORE YOU STUDY, THE LESS YOU USE IT, THE LESS YOU LEARN.

I dont know whether or not it is the right idea of this sentence, but i hope it is. Only Paul can help. Anyways, Enjoy your day! Cheesy

Well, Jupiter, I didnt actually spot that Learning is more general than studying. What I was trying to say is Learning is sometimes a benifit of studying. Well, as we go through the similarity of these two words, it really confuses us often.

Study: to spend time learning about the subject by reading, going to college or examining something carefully in order to find out.
Learn: to gain knowledge or skill by studying, from experience, from being taught...

Well, I hope this helps. Anyways, the sentence you'd mentioned, it should have had another phrase standing somewhere in order to make the whole meaning more accurate.

Any ideas on this one, please send back...
We need your HELP Paul,
Nice day Jupiter  Smiley

Hi Lisa, it's really kind of u to help me. ur definition obviously distinguish the difference between Study and Learn, and i support ur ideas that Learning is the benefit of Studying, so when u study a lot u'll gain more benefit from it, that is, u learn a lot, right? but why the more u study, the less u learn? personally i think it should be The more u study, the more u learn ! or as u wrote, u study more but u use it less so u learn less?

Sad  i think we should forget about this because the more i think of it, the more i get lost!   :?
thanks again for ur great ideas, Lisa
more ideas, more helps  Smiley

Hello

Wow, Lisa, What fantastic ideas you have! I found this clearer. Great!

"The more we study, the less we learn."

study = activities (just activities...it doesn't mean to help us understand or know sth)
learn  = knowledge got in
Hey, excellent.
 Shocked  It's unforgettable...but solvable... Cheesy

Hi Mala, Lisa, and hi to everybody Cheesy

Here is another meaning of The more u study, the less u learn.
If u are too involved in study ( reading many books, going to school or university) u will learn (find out) less what is happening around u.
so the more u study (at school...), the less u learn (in society...)
Let pick up an example
someone:  Do u know there was a big accident at 9.30 yesterday.
                    u:  I don't know
         someone:  why?
u:   coz i was at my school

hope this helps
