Hi all the readers! I really need your helps! I would like some techniques and activities to teach my 24 students who are in Pre-Inter and in EFL. I am looking forward to getting all your replies soon.
It isn't big enough, about 8 x 4m. M teaching with Cutting Edge book. I just want my students become active in class and get more understanding with the vocabulary and also grammar with fun. It is the first time that I have taught English. It is very difficult sometimes I think..!

We are pleased to help you. But, we require some more informations about your class:

- How long is your class?
- What book are you teaching? What is related to?
- What else you have inside your class? (tools for studying)

Nothing we can't do, Sophy!

To teach affectively doesn't mean you have to follow your lesson plan or be strict with the students all time. Sometimes you have to tell them a jok so as they  won't get stress with your class. What I suggest you is that you have to make good relationship with them first. When you have good relationship with them, they will be enjoyed your teaching; as the result, your teaching will go a bit smooth.

To teach vocabulary effectively, you have to find various ways or techniques for students. For example,
-Use the Rub OUt and Remember technique
-Use Flipchart technique
-Scoring game(by remembering vocabulary)
-Give them chances to produce sentences by using the-just-learning vocabularies
-Remind them consequently
-Quizz(as much as possible) them every the end of the lesson related to vocabularies
-Tell them the hints and tips to learn vocabularies
-Tell them the advantages of learning vocabularies

Grammar is the similar thing.

Just ideas te! Wink

Rite now i dont come up with anything yet. But i suggest you prepare some sort of competition, but i advice you not to let that competition becomes WAR.

Competition should be introduced to students, like divide them to fixed small groups, set captaincy and prepare some prize. (your choice)...

Yeah I'm keen on that. But, sometimes it's easier said than done. You're the only one who know your class well. Pre-intermediate level is OK because your students know English quite well. Hmm, to me,a teacher as well, activities don't always work. You know why? This is due to the classroom facility. Sometimes the class is not in a good standard. Let's say there are fixed tables. However, I know you can make it. Don't think it's difficult. Go for it and do you best! You can make it I believe.

You should know that in order for your class to be a success, you have to make your lesson enjoyable; that is to make it useful and fun.

To teach reading you can try:
- Ordering or Sequencing the paragraph
- Teach your student to paraphrase certain sentences
- Read to complete a diagram or pictures
- Guessing the ending (in case it is a story)

For speaking:
- Use pictures and ask students to tell what they see
- Conduct a role play
- Summarize the already learnt article

For writing:
- Ask students to write a story according the given pictures
- Set some problems and tell them to write about the solutions

These techniques are useful and can be used for all kinds of skills. You can use the one for speaking to practice writing if you can make it appropriate. The important thing is to make your students feel that these are fun so that they want to learn.

Hey, i got ideas:

Play: Word of the day : during your class, you may have taught new words. So, at the end of the class, choose a best new word or words for today for students. Aw... i'm not good at explain.

Hey, i just want to add some more:

Actually, I want to tell you that you must always have this concept : "To let your student has what you have"... i mean, teach them all you know.

And, about the class full of activity, I think you should sometimes pick students to teach the other... if you know what i mean.

 Hey guys,  Grin

For some teaching tips, visit www.5steps2teaching.com and download the presentation that I did with Lance Jackson as part of the CamTesol conference. There are 5steps to becoming an effective teacher and we are in the process of developing it into a full curriculum to help all Cambodian English language teachers. You can also submit your email in the www.5steps2teaching website and you will receive some free teaching tips by email as well as a monthly teaching newsletter. The first of the teaching tips and newsletter will be coming out by the end of August.  Grin

I agree with Kimlong, having a good relationship with your students is paramount to success and also try to make your classes interesting and fun.  Cheesy

The 5steps are confidence, rapport, presence, effect and learning.

 Have fun,  Wink
