hey guys,

i found reading in ielts exam is pretty hard to reach a high score. i often run into trouble with matching paragraph heading. is good or not if i just read the first sentence in the paragraph that i want to the answer because it generally contain the main topic?

make me sort it out!

Hi!

Main idea is not always in the first sentence of paragraph. I mean it might mix in the middle and at the end.
to get main idea, you should read clearly in full paragraph, but if you only answer the question, just read quickly.

Good luck!

Most of reading section, we can get the topic mostly in the first paragraph, mainly the first one, two or three sentences. In case, it is a short essay, you will find it, en masse, in the first sentence, which consists of topic sentence and controlling idea(s).

hey Tola and Kimlong,

thanks for your ideas. do you agree with me  that ielts test is a challenge exam in all section because we need to be quick to find answers in the complicated passages ( in the reading section)? i find hard to plough through it.

share your ideas.

Hi Nary,

Yeah me too! I find it hard to do the reading section in IELTS test. Most of the topics are unfamilair to the readers, but that's ok since it challenges us to do our best which results in improving our reading skill.

Have fabulous day

mh...

Like I said,
Finding answer in the text, just read quickly. At first, you have to understand what the question defined and take note the key word.

This is one way to complete:
Read all questions and take note key words( they are mostly remained in the text
     Scanning the texts
You will see related answer. Pause reading when you find and answer 1 question
Continue reading and do the same....

I encourage you all to give feedback

It's better if you take a look on the questions before reading the text!!Indoingso, you can find the answers easily then due to you know what the questions are.

Heah DD and all !

Nary, I agree with you about the reading section cos I'd been taking this kind of test about last two months and I found it was really hard since I'm poor in vocabularies. I usually read questions before reading the text cos I think that it is easy for me to find answers, but it's still difficult for the texts are usually long and complicated, and time is also short for me. However, if we know more vocabularies as well as idoims, I don't think it is very hard, right?

Have fun!

hi friends,

i agree with you all that we should always reading the questions first, but for me i can't member many questions at the moment because i'll confuse. so first i just reading 1 question and find keywords, then look through the passage. indoingso, i easily get the answer.

do you think doing like me wastes the time?

i usually go and practice reading and listening in the GiLC and i spend mostly two hours and a half each time i want to gain the vocabularies from the context (i take 1 hour to do the test as the real one). i think we should learn those vocabularies so as to be familiar to the test.

how about you? what do you think?

Hi DD! Cheesy

There, not only you who can't remember all the questions after reading everyone does, but at least you can catch the meaning of those questions and know which part of the text you're gonna pay attention on. Anyway, your way is also good, yet you would take many times to read the text I think. Smiley

Anyway, it sounds you try hard. Good, Dude! Cheesy For me, I don't spend much time to practice as you do since I don't have much free time. In reading section, I just read some story books, it is my favorite, and I thinks it's the way I practice reading and enlarge vocabulary as well. For listening, I've never practiced by listening to any tape, but I just practice by listening to Love FM and watching TV spoken in English such as Star Movies channel, HBO channel.... and so forth.

Well, I seem I'm out of word to say more now Shocked, pls wait for other great members' ideas na friend. I think they will share you more and more. Wink

OK! Have fun to you all !

I want to share my experience too.
that what i do during the reading section
1.skim through the whole test.
2. skim the whole passage. (the whole first paragraph, the first and MAYBE second sentences of each paragraph, and the whole last paragrah) It must be less than 3 minutes.
3.look at the questions of the first passage. and decide which question group should be done first.( it's usually helpful to do first first)
4. read 2 or 3 questions of the question group you've decided, so that you will know when you've skipped the first questions. always try to answer 2 or 3 questions at a time especially in the listening test. 2 is better.
5.just highlight keywords and scan for them in the paragraph.

There are different strategiest to deal with each question types. knowing that strategies save you a lot of time and produce good result. here is for mathing headings to paragraphs.
1.read the intructions and examples, make sure you understand
2. cross out the paragraph that has already matched in the examples(only if each heading can only be used once).
3.don't waste time reading the headings. begin with the first paragraph and then read through the list of headings( you see, you save time). it's not a good idea to read only first or second sentence. skim through the paragraph quickly and carefully.
there maybe several possible choices, chose the best one.
4. do the same with others..

I wouldn't recommend you read the questions first. you will be very very very confusing. just skim through the passage first.

These are my strategies, it works best for me and produces me good result. try yourself and see if it works.
