Hi Ori_heart,

First, wish you pass your exam with satisfaction!
Second, I would say it's an abbreviation rather than a short cut. Short cut is usually used in IT field, eg., Ctrl+O means open the file, Ctrl+P means print the file, etc. (I'm just a novice in IT, anyway)

Last but not least, (I learn this phrase from Mr.Cool, so it's the virtue of this site) let's go straightforward to the point!

vs / v = versus = (compete/fight against)
eg / e.g. = exempli gratia (Latin phrase) = (for example)
ex = example (I think it's a Khmer English)
ie / i.e. = id est (Latin phrase) = (that is to say / in other word)

Other humble abbreviations:

etc = et cetera (Latin phrase) = (and so on / and so fort)
VIP = very important person.
www = world wide web.
GB = Great Britain
UK = United Kingdom
US = United States
USA = United States of America
UN = United Nations
BBC = British Broadcasting Corperation
CNN = Cable News Network
CTN = Cambodia Television Network
TOEFL = Test of English as a Foreign Language
IELTS = International English Language Testing System
GMT = Greenwich Mean Time
etc.

An excercise for you and the invaluable 5steps members to do as homework

BC =
AD =
ID =
Mr. =
Mrs. =
HIV =
AIDS =
NASA =
Laser =
Radar =
NATO =
OPEC =
Internet =
VSOP =
etc.

Thanks for reading.

Dear Linda et al,

Thanks again for doing my homework.

Absolutely well done!

There is always the word etc. after my homework is obviously because of the plethora of abbreviations and acronyms in English tongue. And I just point out those which are more common or those which are recognized universally.

For Lil_fixs,
Of course, DJ (Disc Jockey) Brett Angel just give us the easy way to remember AM and PM. It's not the original full form of them.

Please see this:

a.m. begins at 00:00 and continues until 11:59.
p.m. begins at 12:00 and continues until 23:59.

Jupiter

PS. What is the full form of "et al" above?

Hi Jupi, Lil_fixs and all!!

To Lil_fixs

You wrote:

Quote

Pm(time)=Pass Morning (Post morning) <===(not sure)

To my knowlegde the word AM is actually from the latin word
Ante Meridiem while the PM is absolutely from Post Meridiem.

Or you can say AM equal to After Mid-night (means morning) and PM equal to Pass Morning

* ante= before

* Post= after

To Jupi:

The abbreviation of Ex is not Khmer style, it is 100% Brt use, to mean Example. ( go to see The Total English Book)

Have funsssssssss!

I'll try to make it short.

They are all about mailing.

"To: " is not a shortcut or abbreviation. It simply means "to".
E-mail address(es) put in "To:" field is(are) the primary recipient(s) of the email message.

Cc: Carbon copy.
A way to send the email message as a copy to the person(s) other than the primary recipient(s). And the email address of Cc recipient(s) can be seen in the message header.

Bcc: Blind carbon copy.
If you dont want the primary recipient(s) know that the email message is sent to somebody else, or there is a notifying message to be sent to a huge number of recipients(it avoids long list of recipients), because address(es) listed in "Bcc:" field won't appear in the message header.

For example:
I sent an email to Chesda, Panha was Cc'ed and Jupiter was Bcc'ed.

Chesda and Panha would see that they received an email from me and that it was sent to Chesda with Panha Cc'ed, but they wouldnt see Jupiter's name mentioned in the message header. Whileas Jupiter would see that he received an email from me and that it was sent to Chesda and Panha was Cc'ed, but he would not see his name listed in Bcc.

*Note that if u list A in the Cc field, then A is Cc'ed.
                if B in the Bcc field, then B is Bcc'ed.
Both Cc and Bcc can be used as the passive when 'ed is added. However, we dont say "I Cc her"/"I Bcc her".

Hope it will explains sth,
Linda
