Hey bunkheam
Public speaking can help you if you have to make speeches and formal speeches, but it that is connected with formal structures and outlining an argument. It is useful to some extent, but it is not really proper preparation for ielts or general communication fluency with foreigners. It is useful, but don't be disappointed you missed it, there are other ways to learn speaking better, which will be posted on this website soon
Public speaking is one way, but it is not the only way. I have written an unpublished document on speaking grammar with confidence and that allows you to speak with confidence and fluency and is more to do with general conversation rather than public speaking, which is really designed for people who need to speak in public. Details will be on the website soon.
I can advise students who are interested in public speaking to buy the books which i have read on the topic, but it is not really relevant for students who are planning to go abroad or work with tourists and speak to foreigners. We can learn some formal speaking structures, but you lose the creativity and freestyle nature of speaking which makes it a special skill. I have lots of fun speaking Khmer, and i think making learning and speaking fun is much more effective than formal courses where you are being trained to be an after dinner speaker at a function rather than an effective communicator of English.
What does everyone else thinks....any practice is good practice though bunkheam, but watch this space, soon we will start our own speaking club for members and you will get some practice joining that once we get it
going!
Think about what you need, and then study what you need to know for when you need to use it!
Take it easy, make learning fun!
Paul
