Most cambodian people always pronounce the word style to sty. But not only this word, overall, all the words that ended in "LE" are always become "Y" in speaking .This is absolutely bullshit. I wish people would change this bad habit. What about all the folks out there? Do u normally pronunce like that or notice people pronounce in that way?

That's not a good sound change to make, because native speakers will not be aware of it and could easily misunderstand.  Huh

I think it isn't like your case Denith! If you pronounce "Computer or Compurer", most time are understood by native English speakers, I dare say!

Yet, on Palm Tree case it absolutely sounds different. I mean no one understands you if you said " Style to Sty or Type to Ty or esp. Help to Hel and so forth". It is so an unacceptable stresses and as I noticed some inept Cambodian English teachers are being used or spoken out such wrong stresses!

I dont know why? Huh Huh

Hi Palm Tree,

I do share your concern about this. I feel a bit frustrated when my friends blame me back after I tell them that it is not the right pronunciation. You're right. For example, smile and mile are often pronounced incorrectly by some people. Personally, I always try to pronounce all the words correctly and if I can't do it, I will try to look it up in a dictionary. Oh, but sometimes I am not brave enough to correct someone because it seems like 'smile' has been thought to pronounced like 'smai'.  Grin

I think the electronic dictionary or dictionary software that has voice pronunciation might be very helpful.

I disagree... only people who pronouce "compurer" are Cambodian people. American, they pronounce "Comput'rer"... they still have "t" while we erode the "t". And American is not English native speaker.
