hey sandy,  Cheesy

great to welcome you to the website, and thanks for your support. I am preparing some reading help for the content of the website, and it will be here soon. The easiest way to help you with vocabulary that you do not know in a reading passage is to have a basic understanding of Academic Vocabulary. These are the big words in English and are made up of Prefix, Root and Suffix. A basic knowledge of parts of speech in English and a knowledge of common Prefix, Root and Suffix can give you the tools to make reading a bit easier.  Cheesy

I know it is frustrating if you know all the words in a sentence except one and this means that you cannot understand the sentence!  :? However, Academic Vocabulary is mainly based on Prefix, Root and Suffix which is the words in English which are formed from Latin and Greek words. So if you know some of these you can guess the general meaning of a word even if you don't know it exactly.

For example a word like...pyschologist

is actually 3 parts  Cheesy

pysche ( origin greek ) mind
ology  (origin latin ) study of
ist      ( suffix to mean a person who practises or believes in)

Therefore we can guess that a psychologist is a person who studies the mind. In the same way, psychology is the study of the mind!

Will have some common prefix, root suffix on the content part of the site soon, don;t give up hope!  Cheesy

have fun,

Hey! Paul, I have almost the same problem as Sandy.
and I hope what you've said will probably come soon.
Also don't forget to give the instruction how can I go to it.

One more thing is that I want to read fast. as fast as I can
But many times I can't read as fast as I want.

Hi, Ori_heart.

For my experience, I can read fast if I am looking for some specific information from the magazines or books. I mean I will skip a lot of information that is not relevent, so it save times. However, once I find the information that I want to get, I will spend a little bit more time on it. I think I is worth to spend more time on the information that I want and it would be waste if I read unrelevent information word by word. Therefore, my own view on reading is that, try to scan for the information that we want, then read it word by word as we find it.

On the other hand, if I am reading something as hobby or entertant, I would not go fast because I am not in hurry. :!:

Hope it is helpful for you.

Ori_heart : there are two skills for faster reader
First one is, skimming. skimming is a kind of skill in reading..if u do the skimming u do the skipping..lolz..i mean u will only need to understanding the overall meaning. u don have to read all the sentences. when u understand the meaning of one paragraph then u should rush to another one.
Second one is, scanning. Scanning is also a basic skill for faster reader. They do the scanning when they need to search for the specific information.
________

but if u just read a comedy or a joke for pleasure then u don have to follow this skills. it will lessen ur hilaries..

You also can be a faster reader if u know exactly from that article.

Hey guys,  Cheesy

Some really wonderful ideas there about reading skills, great that you are using the forum to share useful information about how to be a better reader.  Cheesy

Just to let you know, I have not forgotten about the prefix, root, suffix and it will hopefully be a part of the READING content part of the site by this weekend. I am still working on it, but it is almost finished, so don't worry, it is coming... Cheesy

keep up the great work, sharing good ideas about learning English in the forums  Cheesy

have fun,

Hi,

I have received an e-mail from 5stepts2ielts for a bit long but I just could make it to be here today.

I am interested in Reading section and I am the person who likes reading, but it doesn't mean I am perfect at reading. I may say I am good at reading with what interest me.

I used to experience a difficulty on vocabulary but I stopped having that problem since I found one small key. May I let you know about my experience.

I started reading on something that interest me first then I could move to the next level. It means reading what you like first then your skill of reading will be improved. So when you read something that it is a bit uninteresting or a bit hard it would give you less unsmoothy in reading.

Learning a vocabulary from reading is a very best way because you will be able to understand many meaning of one word according to the word is used in many ways. So all in all try to read as much as you can. Read whenever you can find the time; when you are waiting, when you are on the bus, when you are out on holiday, or even when you are in the bathroom.

Checking every unknown words is not a good way. You may need guessing skill. It means you better try to make a guess through the sentence or the content of one paragraph. Do not stop your reading when there are many difficult words. The first thing you better do is try to finish the whole context first. I just cannot find many words to explain but if you try sometimes to do what I said you may find something different.

I am waiting to see prefix, root, suffix on READING content Mr. Brown.

Hope to see your guys reaction.

Dear Kao Sandy. First as a media liaison of this website, I welcome you and we will always be your help in English improvement.

Reading is probably the hardest subject in all the four macro skills. However, first I would recommend you to pick the text or book at your level. If you pick the text that is too higher than your level, you will encounter alot of vocabulary problems. And day by day, increase your reading level. I do not recommend you to check the dictionary during your reading, I recommend you to try to understand from the context and try to understand the meaning in general, not just word by world.

Sandy, until you get accustomed to what I have recommended, we belive your reading skill will be improved and you can development your professional reading skill.
