Regarding my experience, I think it's important that you understand some culture between the two languages. Sometimes, one sentences in one language doesn't mean what you think in the other language.
For an example, most people think that HUG and HOLD means the same thing in Khmer. However, in English, they means completely different things.
"I HOLD you." refers to sth related to love or care.
"I HUG you." is only a way of greeting.

So it is important that you have to understand the two languages clearly, and translate it so that it makes sense and doesn't convey a different message. You don't have to translate word by word, or translate exactly what is said.

To translate effectively doesn't mean you have to do that every single word. The most significant is that you can brief it by remaining the meaning the same. Therefore, you have to understand first;indoingso, you have to read the whole sentence( or sometimes more) again and again till you are sure that you get the main point.
