:?:  :?:  :?: Me, too. I don't like reading as much as i should   but each time i read boring books, i always find that i learn a lot of things that i never knew before. I know that books can be our teacher that provides us lots of useful knowledge. But I still tend to like reading things like newspapers, magazines, jokes for pleasure and information. I read million of them. But if i had read books that much, i'd become a wise man by now

Friends, please advice me how can i make myself more interested in reading books that are usually boring but they contain lots of knowledge.

Thanks for your advice.

Me, too. I would become a wise person by now!!!

Really, some books are beneficial but they are rather boring. Sometimes it is because the information is so complicated if we do not pay much attention that we will get lost somewhere. Or it is because there is so much complex grammatical structure or vocabulary.

Let me tell you about my experience. It is something i usually do to urge myself to read all those boring books. First, I often read quite simple books like 'joke/story books, easy-to-read newspaper...to refresh my mind.  I know that i cannot cram all the information into my brain all of a sudden. Something has to be done. After i laugh or feel better for a while, I start to take that kind of book to read. I need to read through the book to find the text i find most interesting. If first i can read one interesting book, i will do it non-stop. Cheesy  Well, that's something about my reading experience.

It is obvious that some other people are facing the same trouble. We already know that we are going to be provided lots of advantages by those boring books. But we just can't make ourselves more interested in grabbing those books into our hands Cheesy . The first only way is to encourage ourselves. Sometimes what works for me may not work for others. Perhaps, we can try our own different ways or the same way or whatever way we feel like doing. Cheesy And let's see how it works for each of us!!

That's my experience.
Hey, my friends out there, do u have anything to tell Mr. Cool and me about your reading experience??

Well, once you feel that the book is boring, that means you dont like reading that sort of book. I read the kind of book that I feel interested in reading rather than pushing myself to read what I dont like. That way, u can create a constant reading for your days.
However, if it is neccessary for me to read the boring topic, i know it's hard for me to build my interest in it. So i have to divide the pages for everyday reading, like a page a day, or 2 a day... and also set a timeframe.
Well, that works for me. You can try Wink
And remember to select the useful topic for your reading journal.

Hi Mr. Cool Somala and Linda,

I'd like to admit that reading is the most boring part of my learning. There are, actually, a lot of problems which always pull my hobby away from reading.

It is no strange that people always see something in different way as what Mala has mentioned. Some other people might find something useless while we find it usefull. And of course, I've done a really boring book reading and find that way real effective but it seemed a bit crazy ...

I prepared 2 pages/day to read and tried my best to do it as alike a newscaster reading as possible infront of a mirror in a silent room. The reading was going really well during seeing myself doing a great job in the mirror (I felt as thought I was a real newscaster). After the reading finished, I felt like doing it again. In this way, I think we can also improve our pronunciations but this will take long time to pull off. Hahaha, how does it sound to you guys???

You are all not alone.

I dare say 95% or thereabouts of students find it difficult on this skill.

I consent that reading is the most boring skill in my toefl exam. Never have I gotten satisfied mark on this field.

I have already mentioned that I learn and understand, or can say remember, all the strategies or tactiques of it, unfortunately, rarely have I won on it.

Dare any 5steps members say this field is a piece of cake?

Have funssssssssss! :x

Hello Mr.cool or everyone here,

The most boring book is the most useful book, unbeliveable?
To win the boring book and to win your lazy please let me tell you guys some of my experiences :

1, Do you like music? if you like, you can read and listening to the music and hug the DICTIONARY at the same time ( I meant, get the dictionary stick with you )...
and if you don't like, just try to stay away from the racket or music and throw the unnescessary trivia out of your way. STAY IN CALM and start to read it...step by step...stop by one paragraph and learn how many percent do you understand from that paragraph??

2, If you start to bored your book, just go to have a shower, have an apple, drink water or juice, go to get a fresh air just afew minutes.

3, Oh, don't try to complete that 100 boring pages just a few hour.. leave it for tomorrow to start your next boring day...lolzz i was just kidding.

Guess what?, I love reading the book than my pets.

Ok this is just some ideas.
I hope you like it everyone.
Good day!
Many thanks,

Hi all - forgive me for not naming you here!

You guys have such interesting and funny ideas hah! A lot of them are very good and useful too. I appreciate all your advice. I hope other friends can learn from those ideas, too.

You know what? The most difficult person to win in your life is YOURSELF. A lot of things we should have done but we never do. A lot of things that we should not have done but we always do. You know why? It is because we are human

Okay, from now on, I will torture myself to do more things that i should have done including reading more boring but useful books

Keep up your good work.

Thanks a lot,

Hello Pisethleng,

I'd like to share some ideas about this.

I agree with you that reading is very boring when there is nothing useful we can get afterwards.

What I can tell from my head  Cheesy is :
- Set your reading section how much you want to read today.
- See how interesting or useful what you are going to read is to you.
- Do concentrate on your reading.
- Try to get the main point to each paragraph you go through.
- Develop your reading through books from a lower to a higher one.
For me, I have an additional help from dictionaries whenever I find that there are so many words I don't know and I will go on. So again, please find out what you find interesting and useful and encourage your determination to read with what you have learned.

Step-by-step starts will help you a lot and I hope you won't expect the best results out of the first try. Cheesy

Just some ideas.
Have fun, Piseth. Cheesy

Hi All !! I?m Dalin (but not darling)
All your ideas here are very interesting and very useful for the poor in reading like me. I admit that I am the one who has serious problem in reading. I dare say that if I had insomnia, my reading would be my best pill to cure it?   lolzz? Just reading two or three lines, I will be sleepy or sometimes drop off and let the book watch me sleeping no matter what time it is. Even exam is coming soon; I can?t prevent myself from this. See, how serious my problem is?
Hmm.. It seems to me that all your ideas are just about to get yourself into reading and make it as your habit. However, I want to know your strategies while reading. I mean while reading if you encounter unfamiliar vocabularies, what will you do? In addition, if that text has so many difficult words that you hardly get the meaning, what will you do to deal with that kind of thing, then?

Hope all the members here enjoy sharing your experience.

Dalin

Hi all, esp Dalin  Cheesy

You wrote

I really like this sentence. This situation happened to me last year when I study in the afternoon. You know after having lunch, I always took my grammar book, laid my head down on the pillow and start reading. You konw what? A few minutes later, I left my book by my side and felt asleep. We are in the same boat, right???

How to resolve this problem?

1/ Read only your most favorite book at the time that's you're likely to fall asleep, for example, time after lunch.
2/ Sit up don't lie down when you read. It's easy to fall a sleep while reading when your head is on the pillow on sth solf.

Talking about how to cope with difficult words while reading is an interesting topic. To me, I always highlight the difficult words when I meet them in reading, but not look them up in the dictionary at all. Despite difficult words, I continue to read and read till I finish my reading and then I go back to see all the highlighted words. Next, I decide to check out their meaning, I look up in the dictionary ONLY the words I feel that it's important to understand the reading text or ONLY the words that I want to learn and remember. If I have time, I 'll try to find out the meanings of the other words.

I agree with you, Dalin. It's not easy to overcome ourselves.
