You all have been sharing great ideas. Another thing that may also contribute is lack of materials. I sometimes find it hard & costly to find books I want, not to mention all people out of Phnom Penh.  Sad isn't it?

Hi Sothea,

I do share your concern. I have gone through this tough situation all my learning life. Yes, I am still experiencing this hardship. Some books I want to read are so costly that I can't afford to buy them.

It's no fault of the sellers. If you compare this situation with Thailand, there's something to be discussed. In Thailand, there's a copyright enforced throughout the country. People there can't have an original book copied, so they must buy the original one. Usually, one good book costs about 20 dollars there, according to my econimics lecturer. I'm uncertain if books right over there are cheap or expensive. But I want to point out that they have the copyright law obeyed.

As I see it, a lot of books which are sold expensively are imported from other countries. Mind you, books made in India are cheap there compared with the books made in India and sold in Cambodia. So the students and other people in Cambodia do not have a lot of chances to accumulate knowledge from the books.

Well, sometimes I talk with my classmates about it. They tell me to think better of it. That is to say: copy the books if you think they are useful for you to learn while you should give credit to the authors of the books. Cheesy If the Cambodian students want to read books, the first chance for them is to go find or read in the public libraries.  Smiley Any solution?

You mean Harry Potter series?

Hi!!! friend. you know if you want to be happy in reading:
Firstly, you should consider about what you are going to read wheather it is kind of your interesting article or not. reading with smiling from your heart  ;Dnot force from other people Angry
Second, try to read without mentioning on any difficult vocabularies it means try to get what important events in the article as possible as you can do
Third, keep calm while you read and keep your stress of weakness in reading at home don't bring it with you
Four, take a big smile and clab your hand when you finished it, in other word be happy to what you get from reading
These are just medicine i don't know wheather it fits you or not??? Wink

Hi Guys and Girls,

It's very hard to make oneself like reading when he or she already reaches or almost reaches twenty years of age.

The reading habit should be developed during early adolescenthood (10 to 14) and so on. From the age of ten to fourteen, human brain and body changes drastically. And human mind is also flexible at these ages.

I have seen many good comments in here concerning this matter. As a Khmer student myself, I have struggled to do some long reading. It's not my fault neither my parents'. It's our educational system.
From primary schools to high schools, teachers should assign more reading homeworks, more take-home essays that require extensive but flexible readings.

I don't think my struggle with reading English textbooks has anything to do with my like or hate for reading. I actually find reading Khmer books pretty easy. But when it comes to English, it's a little bit hard because of lack of understanding i encounter everytime i start reading.
So in order to make yourself like reading English materials, you should start with something simple enough that you can understand without the help of a dictionary. Buy funny story books, kid books or whatever both interest you and are simple.
If there are more than ten words you don't know in a page, it might disinterest you a great deal.

Good luck,

Someone might think you are crazy, however, good to try to clab your hands when finished reading.

I think it depend on people themself... For me, I do like reading especially fiction.... As my thought, Reading preference start by how well you understand the meaning of the articles... Once you don't understand what you are reading, you will found it so boring or feel sleepy. On the contrary, If you completely understand about what are reading, you might try to keep reading till dawn... and end up with puffy eyes.... hahahhaha Cheesy
