Thank you,

Poch :?:

Hi Poch Shocked ,

For me, I have no idea too about the reason why Reading is always the most difficult skill. Among the four macro-skills, my reading skill is the weakest one. So, I don't really have good advice for you. But, as I do some research on the internet, I gather some tips about how to improve reading skill.

* Set a regular time for reading every day. Regularly reading will produce significant gains in reading comprehension, vocabulary.
* Develop the library habit. Access to library is very helpful for you to further increase your interest in reading.
* Use a variety of aids to help your reading skill. To help improving your reading skill, we can use newspaper, magazine, books cuz it can endow you with great knowledge that is very necessary in IELTS Reading test. Other materials such as, computer programs are also very useful. For example, Speed Reading, which is one of the computer programs can, helps you to read and understand text more quickly. Speed reading can improve reading skill by
-increasing the number of words read in each block
-reducing the length of time spent reading each block, and
-reducing the number of times your eyes skip back to a previous sentence.
Therefore, by increasing your speed on reading, you?ll be able to save your time during the exam.

Ok! that?s all for what I have for ways to improve our reading skill.
Hope that other members will give you the idea why reading is so difficult??? For me I have no idea.

Have fun,

Chesda,

How much time do you spend reading a) in your own language and b) in English.  Also, with English reading, what sort of texts do you read and how do you deal with unfamiliar vocabulary?

Thank you Nolan for your great tips.

Tdol, for English reading, I spend my time reading almost everyday. But I rarely read Newspaper or Magazine, most of my reading is text books. They might be Legal Texts, IT books, and some reading and writing text books. For vocabulary, it's make me lazy to look for new word definition in the dictionary, most of the time I faced new word, I try to guess its meaning. If I faced it more than three times I will look its definition in the dictionary. That's it.

Nolan, I go to the library about five days a week. But I don't read much but write a lot. It can be update my website, or writing email. I read books only at home both English and Khmer text books. Newspaper and Magazines are difficult to read as there are million of words I don't know when I read them.

Thank you for your good tips again,

Poch

Any reading will help, but in terms of the exam, it is always better to do more targeted reading- read the kind of texts that they use in exams.  newspapers may feature a lot of vocabulary, but you should try to make an effort to read an article in detail, with a dictionary, regularly to get acustomed to the discpline required to get a good score.  Have you tried the site www.breakingnewsenglish.com? It has articles adapted for teaching, with excerises you can do- try there and do some practice. ;-)

Thank you so much Tdol,

The site is really tremendous. It helps with the audio file that helps improve not just reading, but listening.

That's a great website.

Thank you,

Oviosly, via conducting much more research is learners' needs, we, as learners, frequently have met many circumstance in the field of learning.

I, meas, also meet this adversity, but i think there still exist ways improve my learning. And i don't know if my comments are good or not.

Truly, if you want to enhance your reading, you can follow the folling steps above:

First of all, you are to try to learn lots of vocabularies, if you know most of them, you will have wide knowledge of key words, phrases, idoims, and phrasal verbs facilitating your understanding the new language and easily present it the the others.

Secondly, you must have qualification of grammar, and stuctures which serve the most vital role in the field of learning  and presenting the up-to-date language. You will be able to recognize clearly about the reading texts and tests anywhere.

The third reason is that you have to limit the specific time relevant to your schedule to improve your reading speed since it is very important to read the test quickly and rapid reading with deep understanding the meaning of the tests.

That is all for my recommendations, i hope you will give me some feedbacks in order to exchange experiences with you.

Good Luck   Tongue

For me, I think that reading is the hardest part too.. If I feel not good, I can't do well.. I think the reason is when we see passage that need to read, there are many words.. so it might make you bored or think that it's hard to do.. so, for me, I always try to tell myself that it's not so long... that just my view.. other one, about vocab... it make so hard..

Tongue Hello, everyone!

Well, I am not an EXPERT in reading, and I strongly agree that READING is difficult. Anyway, I think you can deal with reading by developing a reading habit. I have read quite a lot of books, and I really find reading enjoyable (but not in the test).

To make reading easier, you have to start reading. But remember, don't read the book that is above your level. If the book has too many difficult words, you will NEVER find the book interesting.

You should quite an easy book which is of your interest. If you like Football, read something related to football. If you like story and novel, read story and novel. Then you will like reading, and you can go on to a difficult book.

You should NOT use dictionary when you read, because if you check dictionary too often, you will lost your interest in reading. Try to ignore the words that are not important.

Have you ever seen films "Harry Potter". I watched it, but I prefer the books better. The books are in more detail, I read and I can see the image of the film in front of my eyes. The books are very thick though, about 200 to 600 pages. There are 6 volumes so far.

Good Luck with Reading,

Greeny

If we talk about reading as test, i agree that its really difficult.

But if we talk about reading as text, i disagree that its difficult.
