Hi stupid student

Your question is a tricky one. It makes me go bananas for hours.

By the way, I would choose A/ an extraordinary number .

Your sentence becomes "Like other fictional characters, Jack managed to find himself where an extraordinary number of important events took place.

"Important events" is a subject and "took place" is a verb of the clause "where an extraordinary number of important events took place. "

B/ there was an extraordinary number  is NOT correct because "important events" is a plural subject and "was"is a singular verb. it's a problem of subject-verb agreement.

I'm in a hurry

Will discuss more soon

In your trouble you can't say one is better and another is less. Because the another you refer to is letter B ( the wrong one) is extremely incorrect and you can't put it in the sentece you mentioned.

Your saying:
Quote
Ex. Like other fictional characters, Jack managed to find himself where_  __of important events took plce.

A. An extraordinary number
B. there was an extraordinary number

Look through you sentence, I can correctly judge which one is the right, it is A!

Why? Please remember guy, If the sentece has the form: S+V+(Obj)+Conj(where, when, what..)+S+verb agreement. This is the reason.

To kimlong and all,

Actually, I don't quite understand your explanation. But you're right to choose the answer A/ an extraordinary number.

Why is B/ not correct?

1/ It's a matter of subject-verb agreement.
The subject "importnt events (plural)" doesn't agree with the verb "was (singular)"

2/ It's a matter of too many verbs. Let's see the wrong sentenc:

Like other fictional characters, Jack managed to find himself where there was an extraordinary number of important events took place.

Here, the subject "important events has two verbs, one is "was" and another is "took place". One subject can't have two verbs at the same time unless it's a compound verb, eg, Tom read and wirte an essay.

Hope you like this.
